This ink pen x color pencil style was something an animator I met in DC this week was doing in her sketchbook, and I just had to try it. I love it. Hi-tec-C and Colerase. WIll do more!

Study at the Frick Collection

Ever since the Rembrandt exhibition sketch that was cut short, I had the burning face-sketch urge, so we went to one of my favorite museum, the Frick Collection. We woke up a bit early to make it to the "Pay what you want" time (Sunday 11am~1pm), and had a nice afternoon sketching. Woohoo!

Boy I like drawing faces. They're so interesting.

As I do a lot of the faces for MAD (Cartoon Network), and used to sketch a lot in the subway a lot, I have grown to like examining faces.

Model Session on iPad

Since I wasn't intending to go to the model session, I didn't have my sketchbook with me---

but I had my iPad!

It turns out I ended up having an interesting exercise. I usually tend to concentrate on the details when I draw on paper, but since I don't have as good control on the tablet I was able to look more at the overall shape. Still prefer analog sketching for these kind of things, but it may be fun to do this time to time.

So I do have some news, both pretty cool.

First of all, my piece that I submitted for Autodesk X Viz Media charity artbook "Art for Hope" is going to be exhibited in Las Vegas! My friend Chris at Autodesk has posted an entry on the blog:

I must say, I have absolutely not guilt in indulging myself by buying that iPad since it is allowing me to draw doodles way more often. We've been having continuous 17-hour workdays for the past...I don't know how long, and it's nice I can get away from my desk and draw in color anytime and anywhere without having to lug around sketchbooks, color pencils and etc. Great for in-between times like subwaytime for running errands and waiting for the food to be served at a diner or cafe.

I think I'm liking this style; would like to come up with more like this.

I'm not sure if I can actually make it to San Fransisco for it since I'm working on a project that needs all the time I can have, but it would be awesome if I can...

I've been in Galleries back in Japan when I was still in highscool with my oil paintings, but this will be my first gallery 'debut' in the US. Wohoo!

[ASIFA SKETCH] Short or Long?

I haven't been to the model sessions lately for various reasons, but last night I managed to attend one. Though there are whole lot of practice I need, the people sketches I have been doing in order to supplement the missed opportunities seemed to have paid off a little. It looks like though, those sketches has changed my preference of life drawing. Since I started my drawing with long pencil render sketches, I have always preferred sitting and staring at the one thing for hours and trying to get every crease right, so I have been liking the longer 4~5 mins poses, but I seemed to have enjoyed the 2~3 mins ones last night.

Part of me is still extremely bugged when I see that my proportions are wrong, but part of me is telling myself that I probably should --not totally ignore, but focus more on the motion for the shorter poses, and feel my lines got more...uh...reckless? in a good way I guess, than my 'scared-to-put-it-down-on-paper' kind of lines in my past sketches. I don't know, is this a good thing of bad?
Either way, I think I have to kind of partition my brain. I do want to study the proportions well and do want to study the more overall, action-muscle-relationship too. I guess until I get used to one or the other, I should tell myself 'this pose I focus on anatomy' 'this pose I focus on motion' and stuff.

Anyho, lots to learn. Bring it on.

One of the other things I purchased at the art store last night was the Creatacolor Monolith Woodless Pencil. I seem to like it a lot. I just remembered I had one FiberCastel PITT Graphite pencil so I might try that one again, but its 9B so I may need to carry around a small bottle of hairspray :P

Fresh Sketchbook

Since I started this people drawing thing and wanted to get a sketchbook with a hardcover, I got/started a new sketchbook. I've been using the Pen Sketcher's pad from BeePaper and I like it a lot--I like using Bic Ballpoints for sketches and that's how I started using that line, but somehow I started using pencil more. I'm usually a spiral-bound lover but noticed that I kinda don't like it when the rings get in the way of drawing, so I'm back to bound sketchbooks---when was the last time...Freshman year in collage?

Anyho I needed to do an inaugural drawing, so here it is. Yeeesyes, penguin. More penguins. My penguin obsession is starting to be noticed by more people.

The last drawing started when my husband said
"Draw a penguin with a bagel!"
and when I started he proceeded to add on, in about 10seconds interval,
"he needs orange juice!"
"give the window a curtain!"
"where's his wife?" (wife is on the photo)
"the wife doesn't have bagels??"
"where's the roomba!"
"where's the kitty!"

etc etc

conclusion: this sketchbook works much better for traveling drawing, and also works well with the pencils I use. yay!

Sketchbook 2010 Available!

The sketchbook (doodlebook) we printed for the convention in January reached us last week, and we were pretty pleased by them! The cover is laminated and on heavy card stock, and perfect bound. Since our 2009 sketchbook was more of a comic-book style and saddle-stitched, it looked a bit more like a pamphlet; we felt bad charging more than $10 for them. We may reprint the 2009 sketchbook so they look better!

I think we will be trying to make this sketchbook an annual thing, and eventually print a hardcover. That's something to look forward to, maybe in 2020 we can print something like "Dacade of AZURE vol1". Hopefully by that time more people will know me and will worth buying, haha.

Anyways, these sketchbooks are available on my site under the "Prints and Sketchbooks" tab. We also have a bundle deal, so check them out! Sketchbook 2010 only is $15.

Sooo I'm back from the convention, and I had been a good girl and kept the promise with my husband to 'not be sick for once during a convention'.
We came back late late Sunday, and WHAM! I'm sick.
I'm glad I managed to hold up though. The convention was extremely enjoyable and inspiring.

I just wanted to post that I have finally made a facebook page. I kinda felt a bit too self conscious making a page that declares myself "ARTIST!!" ...but what the heck. I guess I am an artist. Hopefully more people will know me soon, as I would like to attend more conventions from now on.

Why I like it?
Its like drawing on paper, and has no fancy features that you never use. You get what you draw.

Anyho, I am very happy to inform...

I use to draw lots more manga up to HS but never really got much time to do it since. I have submitted two mangas to JUMP when I was 16 or so, but oh man, when I saw the copy of it about three years ago..even then I was terrified. :P

Anyho, its kinda ironic that now that I actually CAN draw manga decently, I don't have much time. But maybe its just time for me to stop saying I don't have much time and starting it. I wish I didn't have to sleep..what..4-5hrs every day.

Continuing with the TaiChi project, and since we now have a somewhat overall plot and audio, I thought I should sit down and scribble some storyboard ideas I got. I seem to enjoy this a lot. The last time I did this was back in school. I listen to whatever audio I get and listen to it, the first time with eyes closed. Second time around I jot down whatever I 'see' on paper, just moving as fast as the music does, and not thinking about any rule breaking or anything.
Obviously I will have to go back and this time think out much further. Though I'm more experienced as an animator, I find this part of storyboard process preeetty fun.

Lately I've been busy with all the wedding things, and we haven't quite finished it yet either, since there are two more receptions coming up. Otherwise, I've been back to serious animating, currently working at a studio as a Lead Animator, animating hippos, chinchillas and giant hideous monster covered in tattoos, jumping around wrecking cars and breaking buildings. Looking forward to add them to my reel! There are couple shots that I'm pretty proud of.

And! Now I'm starting on a commission animation for a TaiChi business. Design, boarding, animating and editing will be all done by me. It's a 1minute project, so I should be able to manage it. Though my boss at my "work"work has been super cool and letting me go crazy on animation (and the reason why I totally love going to work), its soooo exciting to work on a small project where I can go completely crazy and make it all 'AZ'. Its since that 6min thesis I did back in 2004-5. What's also cool is that I got a permission to post whatever designs, drawing, and test animations on this blog. Wohoo! So hopefully I will be posting more frequently from now on.

I think its safe to say that almost all artists hate to see their old drawings. And there's a good reason for it. And its a good thing too, cause it means you've improved and learned stuff.

I did an experiment... almost a self evaluation. I found one of my drawings that I must have been pretty proud of then, but nothing but a total sh*t and obviously wrong in many ways, and redrew it. And OH MY how terrified I was when I found this file. lol

The one on the left is 2006. I didn't get around cleaning the lines but the red one on the right it what I did tonight. I still have lots to study on anatomy, and lots of other stuff to learn/study--but I'm going to look on the bright side and say 'hey, its a bit better'.

It's cool how big 4 years is.

Hopefully 4 years later, I will be able to shake my head and point out many errors in the drawing I did tonight.

Draw the hell out.

I had a kinda-bad-drawing-day, came home and tried coloring a drawing for few hours, but didn't get any satisfying result---gave up, opened up Sketchbook Pro and doodled for 5 minutes---and came up with probably the best drawing I did today. How ironic. haha.

Looking forward to "ink" and color this. I'm in this phase where I kind of feel like digging out all of my past manga characters (yes..all, like including the ones I was drawing in first grade) and try drawing it. Wonder how it turns out. Oh well, this character is relatively new one.

Though lots lots more to study, I think I'm getting quicker at 'finding' the pose--well, compared to myself few months ago, leaving me more time to go into shadow studying.
Today I was blasting piano sonata on my iPod during the session. (It's not unusual that a Led Zeppelin or Cake following these, but not today--felt classical somehow. Which also made me want to go back playing piano too)

Drawing = so fun.

I think getting back into animation really re-ignited my motivation. Yay!

Happy new years (+13 days) to all!

I'm finally...almost.. over my cold+jet lag combo, so i will write up something about the GigaCon I attended as a guest professional last week. Soon, hopefully. Haha. It was a great time giving a lecture, giving portfolio reviews to students and talking to many people (though I reaally wish I wasn't sick and stoned from cold medicines), being surrounded and getting to know other professionals who has been in the industry longer than I have, hearing their opinions and tips. This con totally set my new year's resolution.

AZURE KNITS has reopened, but a little backed up on commissions. It seems like many people likes the filmstrip scarf. I may possibly have 3 of them+ski mask+wristwarmers+headband+2 hats (including the second one for my husband...who lost it for the second time! :P) on my list. But I do have two more neck warmers waiting for photoshoot this weekend, so stay tuned!

I got a commission to do caricatures and a album cover image for a Band.

Mainly done in SketchBook Pro, some effects on PS.

A commission for a welcome board for a Wedding Ceremony!
A caricature of the Bride/Groom, with the chapel BG, and Text layout for a poster-size printout.
..suddenly became really relate-able in the middle of the project since I am getting married myself...haha

Was planning to do this in the new software Illustudio, but meh...
sticking with Sketchbook Pro.

I love that software...(but I do wish they had a wider variety of pencil thickness---or thickness that doesn't get effected by resolution)
