Demo Reel 2012

So here is my new 'public' demo reel!
Wohoo a bit of 3D at last.
I definitely like my other version that includes the secret footages better, but unfortunately, there are some materials I can't post on the internet. poo. (not R-rated or anything, just so you know.  haha)

Song by my current favorite group, Cloud Cult.

ART FOR HOPE

So
I have a piece in Viz Medeia X Autodesk Collaboration Charity artbook called ART FOR HOPE.
http://www.viz.com/artforhope
Pieces by Brian and my friend Holly Mongi are also included!

100% of the proceeds will be donated to the people displaced by the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck us on the unforgettable 3/11/11.

It was my pleasure to be able to have a piece to help my country.

Thank you Chris Chung for poking me at the Digital Canvas reception back in May, and the Viz/Autodesk guys who made this possible.  You guys....are...I can't even find a word to express how grateful I am.

Please help us support Japan!

Study at the Frick Collection

Ever since the Rembrandt exhibition sketch that was cut short, I had the burning face-sketch urge, so we went to one of my favorite museum, the Frick Collection.  We woke up a bit early to make it to the "Pay what you want" time (Sunday 11am~1pm), and had a nice afternoon sketching.  Woohoo!

Boy I like drawing faces.  They're so interesting.
As I do a lot of the faces for MAD (Cartoon Network), and used to sketch a lot in the subway a lot, I have grown to like examining faces.

Model Session on iPad

Since I wasn't intending to go to the model session, I didn't have my sketchbook with me---
but I had my iPad!
It turns out I ended up having an interesting exercise.  I usually tend to concentrate on the details when I draw on paper, but since I don't have as good control on the tablet I was able to look more at the overall shape.  Still prefer analog sketching for these kind of things, but it may be fun to do this time to time.

Random quick sketches

In NC, zoo and Rembrandt exhibit, which we wanted to sketch more but turns out we weren't allowed to sketch. Sad :(
But fun!

Gallry, and on TV!

Hi all!
So I do have some news, both pretty cool.

First of all, my piece that I submitted for Autodesk X Viz Media charity artbook "Art for Hope" is going to be exhibited in Las Vegas!  My friend Chris at Autodesk has posted an entry on the blog:

http://www.sketchbooknews.com/news/creative-studio-art-exhibit.html

I'm not sure if I can make it to the show myself, but if you can, awesome!  Looks like our friend Phil Noto is involved in the event too.

Last I've heard the artbook itself will be available in December too, so I will post info again as I hear more!  My husband, and my good friend Holly will have their art in it too.

Secondly,
The TV spot for Sweet 'N Low that my husband directed the animation, and him, Patsy and yours truly animated, is on the air!  Media Post wrote an article on it too.
http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/162158/sweetn-low-launches-animated-tv-spots.html

Boy that short was fun to work on, and we are really proud!  I hope you get to see them.

and on Cold Hard Clash

I want to do more of those.  They're so darn cute.

I worked on the second half of this one and the BG,
and some star trails, bg, and sugar packet.

All Analog

Year 6 of daily digital animation/art.
Every time I go to Dick Blick or other art stores I get tempted to do an analog piece.
Once I started, I remembered how much I liked pencil.

Planning to do more of these.

AZURE AT SIGGRAPH!

I submitted three pieces to Autodesk, and they got exhibited at SIGGRAPH.

Too bad I couldn't go there in person, but very happy.
I'd like to go one day.

Meanwhile, I will see it on the internet XD

Felt the need to post this.

Further details will be posted on a later day, but I had to come up with a bunch of this duck character's poses.  So this was the result of my brainstorm at midnight after a whole day of animating and illustrating.  I kinda want to animate these.

Kitty!

Kinda obvious that I want a cat :P
I must say, I have absolutely not guilt in indulging myself by buying that iPad since it is allowing me to draw doodles way more often.  We've been having continuous 17-hour workdays for the past...I don't know how long, and it's nice I can get away from my desk and draw in color anytime and anywhere without having to lug around sketchbooks, color pencils and etc.  Great for in-between times like subwaytime for running errands and waiting for the food to be served at a diner or cafe.

I think I'm liking this style; would like to come up with more like this.

In great need

Both my husband and I have been and is going through the...probably the most busiest days we ever have before. But hey, busy is good. But I sure do want a nice relaxing day at a cozy cafe doing nothing. That's probably why I ended up drawing this haha. Drawn on iPad.

When you're frustrated...

Take it out on your spouse w/fighting games.  At least that's what I do.

I wish.

Being able to draw is a + when you need to go get a haircut but can't be bothered to look through magazines or search the web.  Though of course, there is no guarantee that your hair or any hair would be physically be able to do what it does in the drawing.

Concentration

I know that I have been concentrating on my work for the past few hours when I notice my hair and get surprised.

Autodesk Gallery at One Market in San Francisco!

Looks like a couple of my works will be exhibited at Autodesk Gallery at One Market in San Francisco!  This will be in May.   Too busy being drowned by the news feeds about Japan for the past...almost a month (woa), if it wasn't for C.C from Autodesk sending me a heads up about it, I totally would have missed it.  Thanks C.C!

I'm not sure if I can actually make it to San Fransisco for it since I'm working on a project that needs all the time I can have, but it would be awesome if I can...

I've been in Galleries back in Japan when I was still in highscool with my oil paintings, but this will be my first gallery 'debut' in the US.  Wohoo!

[ASIFA SKETCH] Short or Long?

I haven't been to the model sessions lately for various reasons, but last night I managed to attend one.  Though there are whole lot of practice I need, the people sketches I have been doing in order to supplement the missed opportunities seemed to have paid off a little.  It looks like though, those sketches has changed my preference of life drawing.  Since I started my drawing with long pencil render sketches, I have always preferred sitting and staring at the one thing for hours and trying to get every crease right, so I have been liking the longer 4~5 mins poses, but I seemed to have enjoyed the 2~3 mins ones last night.

Part of me is still extremely bugged when I see that my proportions are wrong, but part of me is telling myself that I probably should --not totally ignore, but focus more on the motion for the shorter poses, and feel my lines got more...uh...reckless? in a good way I guess, than my 'scared-to-put-it-down-on-paper' kind of lines in my past sketches.  I don't know, is this a good thing of bad?
Either way, I think I have to kind of partition my brain.  I do want to study the proportions well and do want to study the more overall, action-muscle-relationship too.  I guess until I get used to one or the other, I should tell myself 'this pose I focus on anatomy' 'this pose I focus on motion' and stuff.

Anyho, lots to learn.  Bring it on.

New style? and more people!

Hey, I kinda like this one-tone sketch-y style.  I might do a couple in this style.
Today my husband and I went into the city for a bit to sit in a cafe and draw people.  There were lots more happy people than in the subway commutes! haha

Subway, bar and more subway

Eeee lots to scan

I've been lazy and not scanning in stuff....will find a day and scan 'em all!   ...I hope!
